Makahambus Lodge No. 315 takes its name from the Makahambus Cave, a notable natural attraction located approximately 30 minutes from downtown Cagayan de Oro City. The cave, celebrated for its hidden beauty, is one of the city's many natural wonders.
While the exact origin of the term "Makahambus" remains unclear, some speculate it may be linked to the English word "ambush," though even local historians are uncertain. What is clear, however, is the historical significance of the area. On June 4, 1900, Makahambus became the site of a victorious battle where Filipino forces, led by Colonel Apolinar Velez and Ramos, bravely defended against the advancing American Expeditionary Forces. The Americans suffered heavy losses, while Filipino casualties were minimal, marking a moment of pride and resilience in the nation’s history.
The Lodge
On September 2, 1994, a petition to form a new Masonic lodge in Cagayan de Oro was submitted to Grand Master Pablo C. Ko, Jr., with the proposed name of Makahambus Lodge. This petition, endorsed by Macajalar Lodge, was signed by 34 Master Masons, including prominent members such as Benito A. Barcelona, Briccio A. Bullecer, Vicente S. Cayme, Peter U. Lim Lo Suy, James C. Go, Andres Alfredo S. Mendoza, Albino L. Ching, Robert S. Dy, Nixon D. Gabud, Michael U. Lu, and Jimmy C. Ting. Their efforts culminated on December 9, 1994, when Most Worshipful Ko granted them a dispensation, appointing Henry T. Ching Tiu as the first Master, MacDuffie A. Tan as Senior Warden, and Henry L. Chiu as Junior Warden. The lodge was officially instituted on December 20, 1994, with its Dispensation Officers installed during the same ceremony.
During the Grand Lodge's annual communication in April 1995, the Committee on Charters recommended that Makahambus Lodge be granted a charter. This recommendation came after a thorough evaluation, which revealed that the lodge had successfully initiated twelve candidates, passed nine, and raised six to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. As a result, the Grand Lodge awarded the lodge its charter and assigned it number 315.
On May 20, 1995, Makahambus Lodge No. 315 was formally constituted by a distinguished team of Masonic leaders, including Grand Master Danilo D. Angeles, Right Worshipful Jose Percival L. Adiong, Right Worshipful Enrique L. Locsin, and several other high-ranking Masonic dignitaries. Following the constitution of the lodge, Very Worshipful Ernesto A. Malapaya, with the assistance of Very Worshipful Dennis T. Gabionza as Master of Ceremonies, installed the officers.
Since its inception, Makahambus Lodge No. 315 has thrived as a robust and regular lodge. By 2001, it had grown to include 52 members and was in strong financial standing, continuing to serve the Masonic community with dedication and purpose.
